OPUS: a short, flightless waterfowl, who is somewhat the main character of the strip. He's a loving friend, and also works in the Personal Ads Section of Bloom County's newspaper, The Bloom Beacon. Opus' favorite pastime is sorting out his thoughts and relaxing in a dandelion field, or being a part of the Men's Kouch Club where he and his other 'macho' friends have meetings. During the late 80's, Opus also had some Star Trek adventures with Cutter John, a retired Vietnam Vet who was in a wheel chair.
